Tower Hamlets

Extra-hot chicken, friends and interfaith discussions

Post written by Dumaeza Nhlapo, Youth Worker in Tower Hamlets.

Recently I had the pleasure of sitting in Nando’s with some amazing young people who are part of our schools work at Raines Foundation School. Together, we wrestled with some big issues facing the world, and them as young people of faith (and none).

We had a Sikh, a Muslim, a ‘Spiritual person’, an Atheist and a few Christians. Their cultures and ethnicities ranged from Jamaica, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Ukraine, Nigeria, South Africa, Germany and the UK.

I was impressed by the amount of extra-hot sauce that was consumed by our young people. But I was even more impressed by their deep reflections and the honesty with which they spoke about things they treasure most about their faiths and cultures; as well as what they find difficult and challenging. I’m looking forward to doing great things with these young people, and impacting our community for good.
